Episode 4: National Geographic Photographer & Filmmaker Bob Krist

AlphaUniverse.com editor Christopher Robinson speaks with National Geographic photographer and filmmaker Bob Krist about his transition from still photography to being a 4K motion picture story teller. In Tech Talk, Sony’s El Deane Naude explains the processes and best practices for pulling a still frame from 4K video. And we go back to Bob Krist for Do This Now tips to help you make National Geographic-caliber travel videos.

Bob got got his start almost by accident. Studying acting in college, he went to Europe with a theater company where he performed at night and wandered the streets of Amsterdam, Paris, Vienna and other European cities with an old Minolta camera by day. It was in those streets that his love of using the camera to tell stories was born. When Bob returned to the US he got a job at a local newspaper where he went on to win an award for his photography. That gave him enough credibility to get a meeting with National Geographic’s director of photography, Bob Gilka, a meeting that would ultimately launch Bob onto a long and successful career working with the Geographic.

Time and technology sit still for no one and seeing the writing on the wall over the past decade, Bob knew that to stay at the top of his game, he would have to be more than just a still photographer. He's worked to transform himself from a photographer to a motion picture story teller. Using today's small cameras that are capable of 4K capture, Bob has become a full-blown multi-media content creator. We discuss the span of his career and how he's transitioned from still images to successful National Geographic filmmaker.
