Alpha Spotlight: The Sony Alpha 7R V ($400 off through September 11!)

The Sony Alpha 7R V was the first to combine Sony’s highest resolution image sensor with a new AI processing unit dedicated to AI-based image recognition. This combination gives professionals a new level of performance, and many creators have taken advantage by adding the camera to their kits. It was named the Best High-End Camera in the DPReview Awards for 2022 and continues to make its way into the bags of professional creators who need a first-class high-resolution imaging tool. Now through September 11, 2023, you can save $400 off the Sony Alpha 7R V. See what other users of the camera are saying below and get your own Sony Alpha 7R V HERE.

We take a look at the Sony Alpha 7R V - the first camera to combine Sony’s highest resolution image sensor with a new AI processing unit dedicated to AI-based image recognition.

Sports photographer Matt Hernandez uses the Sony Alpha 7R V for creative sports portraits, and he says that the AI autofocus system in the camera has been one of the best additions to a camera he’s ever seen. “The immediacy with which the autofocus picks up subjects is incredible, and then it just locks on, even in tough situations,” he explains. “I photograph athletes who are moving around a lot and it stays locked on their eyes (or where their eyes would be) even when they turn around. It also can lock on the ‘eye area’ when an athlete is wearing a helmet. I’ve never seen anything like it.” Read more in How The Sony Alpha 7R V Has Changed The Game For This Sports Photographer.

Photographer Matt Matkin used the Sony Alpha 7R V to capture this incredible star-filled sky in Zion. “Gear wise I was using the Sony Alpha 7R V, which is just an unbelievable camera. As someone who geeks out over anything gear-related, it's just incredible. If someone said to me six months ago you’d be working in Zion National Park shooting the Milky Way with some of the best equipment on the market I would have said ‘Yeah alright mate next joke.’ I still can't get over how fortunate I am.” Read more in Behind The Shot: Capturing A Star-Spangled Sky Over Zion.

Portrait and lifestyle photographer Austin Rupp finds himself in a variety of shooting situations, and the Sony Alpha 7R V is one that’s earned a permanent place in his bag. “The Alpha 7R V is my work horse. Every photo I take goes through this camera. The AF and subject recognition in this camera make it so I never have to worry about missing the shot. The Alpha 7R V is also the first camera in the R series to introduce 4k 10bit 4.2.2. LOG recording making it a very capable hybrid camera. On a recent portrait shoot, there was a bit of a hike before the location and I wanted to pack as light as possible. Thanks to the Alpha 7R V I was able to bring one camera body and still capture incredible photo and video. Throw in a 60-megapixel sensor, fully articulation rear screen, improved IBIS and there truly is no other camera I trust more to get the job done than the Alpha 7R V.” Read more in What’s In My Bag: A Pro-Level Kit For High-End Hybrid Content Creation.

Luke Pyrzynski creates stylish street photography as well as automotive, travel and wedding photography. For everything, the Sony Alpha 7R V is his go-to camera. “Currently, my main camera is a Sony Alpha 7R V. I switched to it after the Sony Alpha 7R IV and even though they are very similar I do notice a lot of differences. What is most impressive is the tracking system, stabilization and improved speed. Thanks to all these systems and improvements, I feel like I'm taking each photo with sense, with taste and I know what the final result will be even in very tough conditions.”

He continues, “If I can compare this camera to previous editions, and I have used them all, it is now the most advanced and evolved camera that I simply love to use on a daily basis. Above that, using puddles or other elements or simply taking pictures from the ground has become even easier and more enjoyable with the fully articulating screen.”

When macro photographer Nadja Baumgartner heard the Sony Alpha 7R V has integrated focus stacking, she had to have it. “This makes focus stacking much easier for me. At first I had to get used to the fact that I no longer move the camera manually, but hold it still, but now I find it ingenious. So I can create much faster and more precise stacks. In addition, the Alpha 7R V has an enormously high resolution of 61 megapixels. This allows me to crop my photos as needed and still publish them very large.” Read more in What’s In My Bag: A Single Camera, Lens & Flash Kit For Getting Up-Close With Tiny Creatures.

Drone pilot and photographer Craig Coker uses the Sony Alpha 7R V for videos in the air with his Sony Airpeak S1 and at ground level. “Recently I’ve been working with the new Alpha 7R V both for ground and aerial. I’m loving it for the new 7 stop IBIS for long exposures and the responsive autofocusing. The 61MP photo resolution over Alpha 1 is certainly appreciated.” Read more in What’s In My Bag: An Airpeak & Alpha Kit For Drone Photography & Cinematography.

Photographer and YouTuber Miguel Quiles likes to shoot slow-motion video with the Sony Alpha 7R V to add a special cinematic look to his work. “On the Alpha 7R V you can shoot 4K 60p footage natively, which is pretty awesome.” There are a few different ways to shoot slow-motion video on the Sony Alpha 7R V - learn more in the video below and read more in Slow-Motion Video Tutorial With Miguel Quiles.
