A group of creatives share their thoughts on the new 50mm f/2.5 G lens and their hands-on results after shooting with it.
“I love the 50mm for capturing lifestyle and even more, up-close portraits. I used this lens for two professional shoots and I was blown away. It is light, nimble, fast and creates stunning results. The focal length gives you this natural view of the world and really invites you to be creative in how you work. What I mean is that it encourages you to relax, breathe and take in the scene as it provides a very “authentic” view of the world which is close to how the human eye sees. For me, this allowed me to work up close and capture some intimate and interesting portraits as well as capture some more pulled back perspectives showing more of the scene. What I love about this is that it captures the world without any hype or exaggeration (if that makes sense). The way I think of it, is that it captures in a very kind and humble way and I LOVE that!” – Chris Orwig

"The 50mm f/2.5 is good for people portraits of a certain look and for street shooting. I used it to shoot a variety of subjects – portraits, street scenes, people in environments, plus I did some close up work. As with the other lenses, the size, weight and sharpness were impressive. This will for sure have a regular place in my kit when I am trying to photograph people in sensitive environments with the α7C." – Ira Block

"50mm is one of the all-time classic photography focal lengths, and for good reason. It's perfect for everything from portraits to action and even environmental wildlife shots. In my time with the 50mm f/2.5 G, it was an amazing lens for skiing. Tight enough for clean action shots, but light enough that I could shoot while actually skiing. It’s incredible. Extremely sharp, but with beautiful contrast and flawless bokeh. It’s the smallest 50mm I’ve ever used, and I’m very impressed that it’s f/2.5." – Nate Luebbe

"I love the 50mm for portraits and street photography. I shot lifestyle, and street and really everything in between with the new 50mm f/2.5 G and it gave me the perfect amount of reach for everyday use. 50mm is one of the most commonly used focal lengths for good reason. It gives me the perfect amount of reach as well as great depth and bokeh. Pair that with the size and weight of this 50mm G lens, and I think it becomes one of the best lens choices for anyone starting out in photography or just wants to carry around one lens." – Phil Nguyen

"The nifty fifty is awesome for so many scenarios! I mainly use it for environmental portraits and getting in closer to landscapes. I am blown away by how small this lens is! Weight is a big factor for me as a petite woman and landscape photographer, so the size and weight of these three G lenses are exceedingly appealing. This 50mm f/2.5 G is a great little lens and 50mm is a focal length that every photographer should have in their kit." – Autumn Schrock

"I like the 50mm focal length for portraits and street photography. The 50mm f/2.5 G is a great lens – very sharp and small. I like its construction and how it's very lightweight. My single favorite thing about it is the size. Moving forward it will surely have a regular place in my kit." – Oveck Reyes

“I really love having this classic focal length in a tiny package. This 50mm f/2.5 G reminds me of my classic rangefinder favorites from a long time ago. It’s a solid little lens! The bokeh was surprisingly good—smooth. It’s a tiny tank and it blows every other ‘nifty fifty’ that I’ve used out of the water! The size is tiny, but the construction is solid and yet lightweight. It’s super sharp, plus the bokeh is really pretty.” – Caroline Jensen

“I absolutely love this 50mm f/2.5 G lens. It’s light, easy to use, friendly, fun and creates stunning results. With portraits, it creates sharp images that aren’t ‘too sharp’ but have a natural and beautiful feeling about them. This isn’t to say that the lens isn’t sharp - it is! But it is to say that if you look closely at the images, the colors, the edges, the details… they all look and feel natural and real.” – Chris Orwig

"I was really blown away by the sharpness. I honestly expected the 50mm f/2.5 G to to look like 'budget' lenses, but the image quality is incredible. This 50mm G is going to be a keeper for me. I think this might even replace the 55mm f/1.8 in my bag." – Nate Luebbe
