Hands On With The New Sony Alpha 7CR

The new Sony Alpha 7CR is packed with exciting features for shooters of both photo and video, and professional photographer and YouTuber Miguel Quiles got a closer look at the camera and put it to the test .“Even though I already own an Alpha 7R V, I plan on picking up one of these to take with me as my day to day walkaround camera due to its excellent hybrid features.” Watch the video below as he takes a closer look at the new camera’s features and puts its performance to the test during a portrait session and a trip to Puerto Rico. “Even though I already own an Alpha 7R V, I plan on picking up one of these to take with me as my day to day walkaround camera due to its excellent hybrid features.” – Miguel Quiles

The Very Best Resolution & Image Quality

“The Alpha 7CR represents the top of the food chain when it comes to the C line of cameras,” Quiles explains. “The C in the name, by the way, stands for compact, and the R for resolution, so it really represents this beautiful blending of Sony’s R series with the compact series of cameras in a way that I found to be very compelling.”

As Quiles takes a closer look at the new camera, he explains how its 61 megapixel Exmor R Sensor combined with the Bionz XR Processor gives you the very best resolution and image quality in this full frame camera segment. “They’ve also included a dedicated AI processing unit which I found to give some of the best autofocusing capabilities to date,” he says. “If you’ve used the Alpha 7R V or ZV-E1, you already know how good this is and it’s really exciting to see they have it in this small and compact body.”

The new Sony Alpha 7CR also features excellent image stabilization with up to seven steps of compensation, which Quiles explains was really useful when hand-holding the camera shooting video or taking long exposures handheld. Not only that, but the camera also has selectable RAW options including lossless RAW. “You can shoot 8 frames per second with the mechanical shutter and 7 frames per second using the silent electronic shutter,” Quiles adds.

4K, 60fps & 4:2:2 10-Bit Color For Video

The camera also excels when it comes to video, and Quiles made sure to explore those features and all they can do. “On the video side you can shoot 4K up to 60 frames per second with 6.2K oversampling if you’re shooting in Super35 mode,” he explains. “You can even shoot those videos with 4:2:2 10-bit color. The color coming from this camera is beautiful, and you can even use S-Cinetone or SLOG-3 if you want to get the most dynamic range out of your videos.” That’s only the start when it comes to video. Quiles says there are plenty of other features that any video shooter will find useful, including Auto Focus assist, breathing compensation and focus mapping.

Small, Light & Comfortable

Quiles calls the body of the new camera beautiful, coming in 29% lighter and with 53% less volume than the Sony Alpha 7R V. “Matter of fact, it only weighs 515 grams with the battery and memory card included which is pretty crazy to me given how many features they’ve managed to get into this camera,” he says. “Having used this camera on my trip to Puerto Rico I fell in love with the feel of this camera in my hand. The grip felt great on the camera itself, and paired up with their GP-EX2 extension grip it improved the ergonomics of this camera even more for me.”
