Instagram came out with two major announcements at a live event in San Francisco today. Not only has the global Instagram community now reached one billion monthly active users, but the company also shared that they are launching a new video service called IGTV.
“We’re announcing our most exciting feature to date: IGTV, a new app for watching long-form, vertical video from your favorite Instagram creators, like LaurDIY posting her newest project or King Bach sharing his latest comedy skit. While there’s a stand-alone IGTV app, you’ll also be able to watch from within the Instagram app so the entire community of one billion can use it from the very start,” said Kevin Systrom, Instagram’s Co-Founder and CEO.
Videos posted to IGTV will be full screen and vertical. The new app allows videos to be up to an hour long – much longer than the 45 seconds allowed on the Instagram app. Videos will begin playing as soon as you open the app and you’ll be able to like and comment on them, as well as send them to your friends in direct messages.
“Also like TV, IGTV has channels. But, in IGTV, the creators are the channels. When you follow a creator on Instagram, their IGTV channel will show up for you to watch. Anyone can be a creator — you can upload your own IGTV videos in the app or on the web to start your own channel.”
IGTV will be rolling out globally over the next few weeks on Android and iOS. Will you use the new video app?
