Sony Artisan Mike Colón just got the FE 85mm f/1.4 GM G Master lens and his first opportunity to test it out was at a bridal expo in New York where he was shooting for Wedding Style Magazine. The expo was a good testing ground because he had a chance to shoot a lot of behind the scenes with models getting prepped for their runway shows. They were getting hair and makeup done, changing in and out of bridal gowns and generally giving Colón a chance to use the lens in the same kind of controlled chaos that a photographer frequently experiences on a wedding day.
Colón is a devotee of shooting wide open for shallow depth of field and he was particularly impressed with the 85. "I really like how sharp this lens is wide open. It's amazing that at every f-stop this lens is razor sharp, and not just in the center, from edge to edge I've found this lens is razor sharp." He continues, "To have that capability, to be wide open and razor sharp is really impressive to me."
In the video, Colón also describes how the 85mm f/1.4 GM is a perfect match for his use of Eye AF. "With Eye AF it found the eye every time It would lock on and track the eye even if the subject moved around."
