The Sony 28-70mm f/2 G Master is a revolutionary lens for all photographers, but for concert photographer Serena Yang, it’s especially groundbreaking. “I was so excited when Sony announced this lens, and she’s definitely lived up to the hype,” she says. Watch and read below as the Alpha Collective member shares why it's her new go-to lens for concert photography.
Low-Light & Bokeh Beauty With The 28-70mm f/2 GM
Concert venues tend to have challenging lighting, but while using the Sony 28-70mm f/2 G Master, Yang says it wasn’t an issue. “Now that I can shoot at f/2, the wider aperture allows me to capture so much more in low light, which is such an advantage shooting in dark music venues.”
Yang also often captures portraits of musicians, and the bokeh produced by the 28-70mm f/2 GM really cranked them up a notch. “This is also an amazing portrait lens. Shooting at a low aperture like f/2 creates more separation between your subject and background, and gives you that gorgeous background blur.”
A Lightweight & Versatile Lens For Concert Photography
The versatile focal range of the 28-70mm f/2 GM allows Yang to capture the show from all angles. “This lens is like multiple prime lenses in one, and has such a versatile zoom range. She is definitely a workhorse lens and always delivers super sharp and detailed images, even in the dark! I mean the clarity in these pictures speaks for itself.
To capture every moment of a concert, Yang has to be nimble. Not a problem with the 28-70mm f/2 GM. “And I know what you’re thinking, ‘An f/2 zoom lens probably weighs a million pounds,’ but at only two pounds – she’s super lightweight and compact.”
