As part of their work, sports photographer Jean Fruth and wildlife and conservation photographer Melissa Groo both capture fast moments that can’t be replicated. They also tend to have long days of shooting – whether that be on the sideline of a football field, or outside in an actual field patiently waiting for wildlife. For the work that they do, it’s easy to see why the new Sony 300mm f/2.8 G Master is a perfect addition to their kits. Both Fruth and Groo want their images to tell a story, and for each of them, lenses are an incredibly valuable tool to help them do so. “As a wildlife photographer, lenses are everything,” explains Groo. “To be able to get this much reach in this size lens, that’s this light, is something new.” The two photographers are often shooting for many hours a day, so the weight is no small issue for either of them.
“For me,” adds Fruth, “what I need most is a lens where I can rely on the autofocus. There are no do-overs in sports photography. You need to capture the athlete at his or her peak moment, every time.”
Groo, who took the Sony 300mm f/2.8 G Master in the Masai Mara, Kenya, to photograph various animals of all sizes, was amazed at how lightning fast the speed and focus acquisition was. “In a place like Africa, where you’re switching from photographing a little bird, to an animal that’s suddenly shown up. Sometimes your subject is really, really big. The 300mm for situations like this, is an absolutely perfect lens.”
Groo adds, “I can’t imagine trying to tell stories without the G Master lenses.”
