Take A Deep Dive Into The New Sony 24-50mm f/2.8 G Lens

The new Sony 24-50mm f/2.8 G is compact and lightweight without sacrificing performance, making it the perfect carry-around lens to use for just about anything – portraits, close-ups, snapshots, videos and more. Pro portrait photographer and YouTuber Miguel Quiles had the opportunity to spend a few weeks with the lens, and he says there’s a lot to talk about. Watch the video below as he takes a deep dive into the new lens and all of its exciting features. Learn more about the new Sony 24-50mm f/2.8 G HERE.

It’s fast enough to keep up with your Sony Alpha camera and compact enough to go anywhere. Miguel Quiles takes a closer look at the new Sony 24-50mm f/2.8 G lens.

Carefully-Crafted With Close-Up Capabilities

First Quiles walks us through the design of the new lens, and it’s clear it was made with hybrid creators in mind. The full frame lens produces beautiful bokeh for stills and video, and the autofocus maintains pinpoint accuracy. “This lens can even keep up with the new Alpha 9 III’s insane 120 frames per second burst rate for stills,” he says, “and it’s even fast enough to keep up with a moving subject when you’re shooting video at 4K 120p. Those linear motors are not only fast but very quiet, so I feel confident using it for my  video work.”

What else can you find on the lens itself? The outside of the Sony 24-50mm f/2.8 G features an aperture ring and an aperture click switch, a zoom and focus ring, a customizable focus hold switch and an autofocus and manual focus switch.

“Another thing that I found interesting with this lens was its close-up capabilities,” Quiles explains. “You can get very close to your subjects at either 24 or 50mm using auto focus, and you can even get a tiny bit closer if you focus manually.”

Let’s See The New Lens In Action

Quiles put the new lens to the test at his studio, first seeing how it performed in terms of focus breathing. You can see firsthand the results as he shares his view from his camera. “It does an excellent job there,” he concludes.

The lens is also obviously optimized to perform with Sony camera bodies like the Sony Alpha 7CR. “This means that you’re getting outstanding reliability and autofocus performance. And it even supports the Active Mode Stabilization feature that’s available on some of the newer Sony Alpha camera bodies. If you’re a prime lens shooter, then you might be like me and recognize that this lens covers three focal lengths that are super popular for stills and video work. For me that’s 24mm, 35mm and the 50mm focal length.”

He wraps up his evaluation saying he’s excited to use the 24-50mm as his everyday walkaround lens. “As has been the case with Sony lenses, they’ve managed to include excellent optics, top-notch autofocus performance and operability all within a compact, lightweight lens design that will inspire you to take it out and take it with you everywhere. I for one am really excited to use this as one of my everyday walkaround lenses for my everyday walkaround camera body, which is the Alpha 7CR.”

“After using this lens for a few weeks, I think you’ll love it if you need a lightweight, versatile zoom lens.”
