What’s In My Bag: How Jared Gant Gears Up For A Wedding Day

Colorado wedding photographer Jared Gant (@jmgantphotography) has been photographing weddings for nearly a decade. Since a wedding is such a significant event in one’s life, capturing the memories of the day is an important job and one that Gant takes seriously. Knowing that he needed the most reliable gear for his line of work, in November 2017 he picked up his very first Sony camera and lens – the α7R III and Sony 55mm f/1.8. Within just a few weeks he fell in love with Sony’s mirrorless camera system and started making adjustments to convert his full studio over to Sony – and he hasn’t looked back since. Check out the kit he’s put together to capture his wonderful wedding photos.

“These two features alone have changed the way that I photograph weddings. I can now put more energy into creativity and less on clunky repositioning for focus.”

Cameras

Sony α7R III (x2): The moment I started working with the α7R III I was hooked on its incredible tech and features. The Eye Auto Focus and Electronic View Finder (EVF) were the first two things that stood out to me. These two features alone have changed the way that I photograph weddings. I can now put more energy into creativity and less on clunky repositioning for focus. The camera simply nails focus without effort. In addition, my workflow speed has increased dramatically, as the EVF allows me to visually see my exposure.

Sony α7 III : For me, the α7 III is as impressive as the a7R III, and, with slightly smaller files, it’s perfect for when I am rapid firing, shooting through movement, and engaged in high-speed action like a party dance floor.

Lenses

Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 G Master: I shoot with two cameras the vast majority of the time, one under each arm. In the morning, during bridal and groom prep, I shoot with the 16-35mm. I use the 16-35mm to capture the energy and emotion of an entire room of family and friends and to get creative, photojournalistic results. Then at the reception once the party really gets going, I’ll switch back to this lens to capture and emphasize dance movements and emotion.

Sony 90mm f/2.8 Macro : I shoot with this lens during bridal and groom prep. I use the 90mm for capturing details like jewelry, shoes, and flowers, and to get a clean compression for portraits.

Sony 24-70 f/2.8 G Master: Later in the wedding day, I’ll need to be able to capture anything from the bride walking down the aisle to the groom putting the ring on her finger, so I’ll switch to using my 24-70mm.

Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G Master: I use this lens to capture a variety of happenings during the event. This along with my 24-70mm gives me a focal range to shoot just about anything I need to.

Sony 55mm f/1.8 : The 55mm was my first Sony lens and it’s still one of my go-to lenses when I want to go light and be stealthier for a more journalistic approach.

Sony 28mm f/2: This small, yet very capable 28mm is another one of my go-tos when I want something feather light and super well-balanced on my camera bodies. Put the camera on silent and people won’t even know you’re shooting.

Accessories

Creative lighting is my jam, and MagMod products have been my go-to modifiers since their first release 5 years ago. The speed, durability and convenience of these products allow me to add creative, cinematic lighting onsite and with minimal effort. And, of course, any good lighting needs a good foundation. I use the Manfrotto 1004 BAC stands for their stability as well as their ability to stack together.

Lights: Flashpoint Evolv 200 (x3), Flashpoint Zoom Li-on R2 (x2), Flashpoint R2 Pro Transmitter

Light Modifiers: MagGrid, MagSphere, MagGel, MagBeam, MagBox

Light Stands: Manfrotto 1004 BAC Light Stands

These other miscellaneous pieces of equipment play a huge role in any wedding day. The Holdfast Money Maker strap allows me to seamlessly go from one camera to the other while evenly distributing the weight across my back. SD cards, extra batteries, and an awesome camera bag keep my gear in good working order and safe from any wedding-day hazards. Ultimately, this means an easier job for me and a better end result for my clients.
